Proclamation
Family Court Awareness Month
WHEREAS, the Leadership Council on Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence estimates that more than 58,000 children per year are ordered into unsupervised contact with physically or sexually abusive parents following divorce in the United States — a number exceeding twice the annual rate of new childhood cancer diagnoses; and
WHEREAS, at any given time, an estimated half a million children in the United States are living unprotected with a violent parent following their parents’ divorce; and
WHEREAS, the family court system frequently fails to recognize coercive control, post-separation abuse, and the dynamics of domestic violence, resulting in outcomes that endanger children; and
WHEREAS, The Barron Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has established November as Family Court Awareness Month to shine a light on these failures and advocate for child safety in courts across America; and
WHEREAS, communities across all 50 states are joining the #HotPinkForChildren movement to make visible the children who deserve protection;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, [Mayor/Official Name], [Mayor/Commissioner] of [City/County], do hereby proclaim the month of November [Year] as Family Court Awareness Month in [City/County], and urge all residents to stand with protective parents and the children who depend on them.
